CFEE Professional Certification Class: Project Management
Project management is the management of the project to deliver the event. It concerns integrating all the areas of management such as marketing, design and operations so they efficiently use the event resources and satisfy the objectives of the event takeholders. It produces an accountable system used to report to the event stakeholders, delegate tasks to the event team and establish a control timeline. In particular it employs the tools of project management to manage the phases of the event from the concept through the planning and preparation to the event close down.

The IFEA City-Event Project Challenge
What could we accomplish if we pooled our expertise with that of our global peers? Here’s your opportunity to find out, to test your creative skill-set against a real-world challenge, and to spend some formal and informal time strengthening your professional network.

Participants will be divided into teams (selected randomly on Day One of the convention) and presented with a specially-selected host city challenge, to be solved using the power of events. Teams will then have the remainder of the convention (days and evenings) to meet, research, brainstorm, and plan the ultimate answer to the assigned task-at-hand.

Presentation of solutions will be on the final afternoon of the convention and judged by an impartial panel of industry and host city professionals. For a combination of fun, education, professional networking and…perhaps…bragging rights, you won’t want to miss the IFEA City-Event Challenge!

Inspire the Industry - Changing Perspectives: Building a Better Event Leader - Bringing the Industry and Academia of Event Management Together
As we look to the future and sustainability of our industry, from all creative, business, marketing, and financial vantage points, we have come to understand that the natural evolution of our industry necessitates changing perspectives; one in which the professional and academic sides of the equation must grow closer together through new partnerships and the creation of new opportunities to help us all support, encourage, train and build better event leaders for the future.

The IFEA is proud and pleased to welcome one of the leading global academic authorities in our field to help us define that route and prepare for new journeys that lie ahead. Changing Perspective: The New World of Newspapers and Community Events
Among the key stakeholders of our events, whose perspective has had to change dramatically in order to compete in and serve our/their communities, are the traditional print media. Do event partnerships still help to enhance the local newspaper brand? How and why has the Union-Tribune had to change their event strategy to better serve their readers?  Are events driving ROI for them and their clients? Additionally, with social media and people being able to get their news from multiple outlets, how do we provide additional value to our readers and encourage two-way communication?

Newspapers all across the country are building up their event portfolio as an extension of their brand to enhance their interactions with their readers. The Union-Tribune now has five of their own events and plans to continue to grow this part of their business moving forward.

Come join us as Britt Nevetsky of the San Diego Union-Tribune shares her years of insights and experience, and discusses the important role events play in connecting them with the San Diego community.

Surf's Up!': IFEA Foundation 25th Anniversary Party & Live Auction
Our primary, annual fundraising event, celebrating the IFEA Foundation’s 25th Anniversary in 2018, is an all-important source of support that allows us to confidently provide convention scholarships to many young professionals who will become the next generation of industry leadership and to those deserving organizations working to build a solid and successful foundation for their festivals, events and communities. The funds raised also support our capabilities to provide and host top-quality industry presenters, speakers and programming, helping us to raise the bar for everyone in our global industry.

Surrounded by the retro-ambiance of the Town & Country’s Grand Plaza, including sparkling swimming pools, fountains and the Tiki Pavilion, complete with the surf and sun music of the 1960’s, this year’s IFEA Foundation Party promises to be a fun, laid-back and memorable evening with good friends, for a great cause. With an ‘Opening Reception’ from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. (remember to bring your drink tickets) followed by a sit-down, interactive dinner with special friends from around the world, this special evening will be interspersed with bidding on a selected menu of once-in-a-lifetime experience packages, helping us to reach our annual goal of exceeding the previous year’s success. Best of all, the IFEA Foundation Party is included at no extra charge as part of your convention registration! So grab your flip-flops and best 'Tikiritaville' attire and plan to be there for a special and memorable evening!

Inspire the Industry - Inside Perspective: The Quickly Growing Event Roles, Expectations and Challenges of Global Host Cities
All cities are experiencing an exponential growth in the number of events that they must now try to effectively service, protect and budget for. For most this has come about through a gradual evolution. For the City of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, their country’s 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2017 brought about the equivalent of an event ‘ice bucket’ challenge, with scores of new events (many major undertakings on their own) being introduced and many more existing ones stepping up to new levels of needs and expectations, all in a one-year period. This intense gauntlet of preparation, process and production was an unqualified and memorable success, but those who served ‘behind-the-curtain’ (i.e. construction coordination, human resource planning, assessing risk and mitigation activity, intergovernmental relations, allocation of space, minimizing impacts on residents, working with the local businesses, funding, et al.) while the spotlight was on their city for 365 straight days, learned many new and valuable lessons, faced both expected and unexpected challenges, and helped to set the stage as the city looks to the future of event and city partnerships in the nation’s capital.

Control Freaks Anonymous - A 12-Step Plan to Achieve Sanity & Success
Hi...my name is Festival Planner and I'm a control freak. To be a success in the event world, one has to be a detail-oriented professional who makes sure hundreds of other people get everything done in time to open the gates. But the Control Freak style of management can quickly lead to burn out, lack of engagement, trust issues and stagnant growth. This 12-Step Program can help curb those tendencies to create dynamic teams inspired by a visionary leader, versus managed by box-checker. Learn to delegate authority over tasks, build peer accountability, provide meaningful feedback, reward big-picture thinking and create the next generation of leaders that will sustain your event.

IFEA City-Event Project Challenge Wrap-Up
What could we accomplish if we pooled our expertise with that of our global peers? Here’s your opportunity to find out, to test your creative skill-set against a real-world challenge, and to spend some formal and informal time strengthening your professional network.

Participants were divided into teams (selected randomly on Day One of the convention) and presented with a specially-selected host city challenge, to be solved using the power of events. Teams had the remainder of the convention (days and evenings) to meet, research, brainstorm, and plan the ultimate answer to the assigned task-at-hand.

Come hear their presentation of solutions, judged by an impartial panel of industry and host city professionals. For a combination of fun, education, professional networking and…perhaps…bragging rights, you won’t want to miss the wrap-up of our first convention  IFEA City-Event Challenge!

Recycled Perspective: Zero Waste Management for Events Workshop
Festivals and events provide many unique challenges to waste diversion.  This session will demonstrate how festivals can develop a zero waste strategy to fit the unique environment and requirements.

On average festivals, fairs and exhibitions can create over 50 MT of waste over per day.  Add unique elements like agriculture waste, multiple vendors, guest and rides, the number of waste streams is complex to start.  It is a big and bold move to implement a zero waste strategy to reduce waste going into the landfill.
A zero waste plan takes a multiple of resources including financial, knowledge, human and infrastructure.  This session will show how aligning your zero waste plans to a sponsorship opportunity can provide all the essential resources and move the results forward faster.
